Locker Room Policies

1.  Introduction

The Locker Room Policy aims to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all players during their time in locker rooms. This policy aligns with the principles of USA Hockey and SafeSport, promoting the well-being of all participants and preventing misconduct in any form.

 2.  Policy Statement

All individuals in the locker room, including players, coaches, and staff, are expected to maintain a standard of respect, safety, and professionalism. Inappropriate behavior, including harassment, bullying, or any form of misconduct, will not be tolerated. All individuals must comply with all rules promulged by USA Hockey and SafeSport related to locker rooms. All coaches, volunteers and team managers must be SafeSport certified to be present in a locker room and must abide by all SafeSport rules.  

 3.  Responsibilities

Players: Players are expected to respect their teammates and coaches, adhere to the locker room rules, and report any inappropriate behavior to a coach or program administrator.

Coaches and Staff: Coaches and staff are responsible for monitoring the locker room environment, ensuring that all interactions are respectful, and intervening in any situation that may involve misconduct.

Program Administrators: Responsible for implementing this policy, educating participants about locker room expectations, and addressing any concerns related to locker room behavior.

 4.  Locker Room Guidelines

Respectful Behavior: All participants must treat each other with dignity and respect. This includes avoiding offensive language, jokes, or any behavior that could be perceived as bullying or harassment.

Supervision: Coaches or designated staff must be present in the locker room during practices and games to provide supervision and ensure compliance with this policy.

Privacy and Confidentiality: Players should respect each other's privacy. Discussions about personal matters should remain confidential, and any concerns should be reported to a trusted adult.

Dress Code: Players should adhere to appropriate dress standards when entering and exiting the locker room. Changing clothes should be done discreetly, and players should be encouraged to use private changing areas if available.

No Electronic Devices: The use of cell phones, cameras, or any electronic devices with recording capabilities is prohibited in the locker room to protect the privacy of all individuals present.

Hazing and Bullying: Any form of hazing, bullying, or harassment is strictly prohibited. Players should feel safe and supported in the locker room environment.

 5.  Reporting Procedures

Immediate Action: If a player feels unsafe or witnesses inappropriate behavior, they should report it immediately to a coach or program administrator.

Documenting Incidents: Players should document any incidents of misconduct, harassment, or bullying, providing as much detail as possible, including:

 •       Names of individuals involved.

•        Date, time, and location of the incident.

•        A description of what occurred.

•        Any witnesses present.

Reporting Channels: Players are encouraged to report incidents to:

 •        Their coach.

•        A program administrator.

•        The designated SafeSport Coordinator.

Reports can be made verbally or in writing, ensuring clarity and thoroughness.

Confidentiality: All reports will be handled confidentially to the extent possible. However, some information may need to be shared with relevant authorities to conduct a proper investigation.

No Retaliation: Retaliation against any individual who reports concerns or participates in an investigation is strictly prohibited. Any acts of retaliation will be treated as a serious violation of this policy and may result in disciplinary action.

 6.  Investigation Process

Initial Assessment: Upon receiving a report, the program administrator or SafeSport Coordinator will conduct an initial assessment to determine whether a full investigation is warranted.

Investigation: If necessary, a thorough investigation will be conducted, which may include:

•        Interviewing the complainant, alleged perpetrator, and any witnesses.

•        Collecting relevant documentation (e.g., messages, emails).

•        Observing interactions within the locker room environment.

Findings and Resolution: After the investigation, findings will be documented, and appropriate actions will be taken based on the outcome. This may include:

•        Educational measures for those involved (e.g., workshops on respect and communication).

•        Disciplinary actions, which could range from warnings to suspension or expulsion from the program.

•        Collaboration with law enforcement if required.

Communication: The affected parties will be informed of the investigation's outcome, respecting confidentiality as much as possible.

 7.  Preventive Measures

Education and Training: Regular training sessions will be conducted for players, coaches, and staff on topics such as:

•        SafeSport principles and guidelines.

•        Effective communication and conflict resolution.

•        Recognizing and reporting inappropriate behavior.

Promoting Positive Locker Room Culture: Programs will encourage a culture of respect and support by:

 •        Facilitating team-building activities that foster camaraderie.

•        Creating opportunities for open dialogue about locker room expectations

•        Establishing positive team norms and values that all members agree to uphold.

Regular Reviews: Program administrators will conduct periodic reviews of locker room policies and practices to ensure compliance and effectiveness. Feedback from players and coaches will be solicited to improve the locker room environment continually.
